Pitt Alumnae Flame-bearers to Pass "Light of Learning" to 400 Freshman Women in Traditional Lantern Night Ceremony Aug. 28
PITTSBURGH-University of Pittsburgh alumnae "flame-bearers" will give the "light of learning" to approximately 400 freshman women, including their daughters and granddaughters, during the 85th annual Lantern Night Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, in Heinz Memorial Chapel, Fifth and Bellefield avenues, Oakland.
The freshmen will gather at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral of Learning Commons Room to receive a lantern and prepare for the procession to the chapel.
At 7:20 p.m., the women will process with unlit lanterns to the 7:30 p.m. ceremony at the chapel and, following the event, will return with lanterns that have been lit by the 40 Pitt alumnae flame-bearers to the Commons Room for a reception.
Provost James V. Maher will give the University welcome, and 2005 Alumnae Council Distinguished Alumna Nancy Welfer (CAS '40, Law '49) will deliver the Freshman Address.
A pioneering Pittsburgh attorney, Welfer spent her legal career at Mellon Bank where she worked in estate planning and served as a vice president and an associate counsel in the legal department. Welfer served in the U.S. Navy on active duty during World War II and retired as a lieutenant commander of the Naval Reserve Supply Corps in 1968. An active Episcopalian and member of the Zonta Club of Pittsburgh, Welfer also is a past president of the Pitt Alumni Association and past secretary-treasurer of the Pitt Law Alumni Association. She is a current member of the Pitt Alumni Association and remains active in many University activities.
Other participants include Keith Schaefer (CAS '71), president of the Pitt Alumni Association, who will give the alumni welcome; Lauren Cavallaro, Panhellenic Association president, who will speak on behalf of the students; and Martha Ann Terry (FAS '94) and Maureen Cross Bolden (CAS '92), who will represent the Alumnae Council as its president and Lantern Night chair, respectively.
