PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering has appointed William Stanchina as the new chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective Oct. 17.

Prior to his arrival at Pitt, Stanchina had been with HRL Laboratories (formerly Hughes Research Laboratories) in Malibu, Calif., since 1984. During that time, he oversaw many research and lab groups in his capacities as senior staff engineer and senior scientist. His most recent position was director of the Microelectronics Laboratory.

"I have every expectation that Dr. Stanchina will be a great colleague and leader for our Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering," said Gerald Holder, dean of the School of Engineering. "He joins an important list of scientists that have come from HRL Laboratories and joined some of the world's best universities."

Stanchina received the Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California and went on to become an associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, where he taught courses in semiconductor physics and quantum electronics. He has written or contributed to more than 65 publications throughout his career, is a member of many professional societies, and holds 16 patents.
