Pitt Office of International Services to Hold Debate, Lecture, And Panel Discussion for Its Culture of Peace Event Series

PITTSBURGH-As part of the University of Pittsburgh Office of International Services Culture of Peace Event Series and the Pitt Student Government Board Diversity Week, a debate, lecture, and panel discussion will be held March 28. The debate, titled "Is the Global Economic System Going to Crash?" is from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 3431, Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St.; the lecture and student panel discussion, titled "Diversity for Peace-Introduction to Global Movement for the Culture of Peace, Students as the Actors," is from 7:15 to 9 p.m. in Room 244B, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

David Adams, the U.S. representative for the Fundación Cultura de Paz, will participate in both the debate and lecture and student panel discussion. Adams, former United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) director of the Unit for the International Year for the Culture of Peace, was a professor of psychology for 23 years at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. In 1992, he initiated the UNESCO Culture of Peace Programme as a supplement and alternative to military peacekeeping operations.

Moderating the debate will be Josephine Olson, director of the Pitt International Business Center and a professor of business administration in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. Panelists are Adams; James Cassing, a Pitt professor in the Department of Economics; and representatives from Pitt's Black Action Society, Campus Women's Organization, Asian Student Alliance, Amnesty International, and Model U.N.
