Pitt Alumni Association Elects New Slate of Officers

PITTSBURGH-Brian Generalovich (CAS '66, DEN '68), a dentist in Hermitage, Pa., who, in 1964, lettered in University of Pittsburgh football, was named president of the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association, and F. James McCarl (CGS '73), chair of the board, chief executive officer, and president of The McCarl Group, was named president-elect at the association's board meeting, along with several other newly elected officers.

Other Alumni Association appointees are Vice President Mary Ellen Callahan (CAS '90), partner with Hogan and Hartson law firm in Washington, D.C.; Vice President Jack D. Smith (CAS '69, MED '73), an orthopedic surgeon in Greensburg, Pa.; Secretary Chester R. Babst (LAW '73), managing partner of Babst, Calland, Clements, and Zomnir, a Pittsburgh-based law firm; and Treasurer Gary T. Brownlee (CAS '74, KGSB '78), cofounder and managing partner of New State Mortgage in Merrillville, Ind.

A Pitt Alumni Association 2000 Volunteer of the Year, Generalovich recently served as president-elect of the association. He also has served as treasurer and vice president of Pitt's Alumni Association as well as director emeritus of its board of directors.

Generalovich attended Pitt on an athletic scholarship and played basketball from 1961 to 1964, lettering in that sport, and football in 1964. Drafted by the New York Knicks, the Boston Patriots, and the Pittsburgh Steelers after earning the Bachelor of Science degree, Generalovich passed up these opportunities to attend Pitt's School of Dental Medicine. While in dental school in 1965-66, he played in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame's Western Chapter in 1986 and the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1996 and serves on its board of directors. Generalovich also was chair of the building committee for the Pitt Alumni Center Project and received the Varsity Letterman of Distinction Award in 1993. He also is a member of the Rocky Mountain Orthodontics Dentist Athletic Hall of Fame.

A nationally known entrepreneur, industry leader, and philanthropist for more than 30 years, McCarl started his career at the helm of McCarl's, Inc., a family-owned business. He has received numerous awards, including Pitt's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002, the Pitt Alumni Association Volunteer of the Year Award in 1993, the ARC Beaver County Chapter Distinguished Community Service Award, and the Community Champion Award for Western Pennsylvania. He and his son, Foster, (CGS '98) created the McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success in Pitt's College of General Studies. And, to honor Pitt athletes, he, along with his wife, established the F. James and Carol McCarl Hall of Champions in the Petersen Events Center. Honored by CGS as an outstanding graduate in the mid-1990s, McCarl is chair of Gateway Bank of Pennsylvania.

Callahan, who was a Chancellor's Scholar at Pitt as an undergraduate, received her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. She specializes in antitrust and has extensive litigation experience in First Amendment cases involving telecommunications and Internet policies and filtering. A Pitt Truman Scholarship winner, Callahan graduated magna cum laude and received the Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Pitt's Honors College in 1990.

On staff at Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greensburg, Smith is president of the University of Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Alumni Association, has served as Pitt Alumni Association director-at-large, and was a member of its executive committee. He also is a member of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. In addition, Smith is president of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art's board of directors.

Babst is a nationally recognized authority on Clean Air Act issues with more than 30 years experience providing counsel on environmental matters to both private and public clients. His practice focuses on compliance and permitting issues and multimedia enforcement. He has developed preventative law programs for training and auditing, and a detailed program for dealing with environmental inspections. While in Pitt's School of Law, Babst was topics and research editor of the Law Review.

Brownlee is a 30-year veteran of the financial services industry. A life member of the Pitt Alumni Association, Brownlee has served as the Midwest region board representative for the association and most recently chaired its scholarship committee. He is an active member of the Pitt Club of Chicago, has served on the club's executive committee since 2000, and is the club's treasurer. He and several other club members created the Pitt Club of Chicago endowed scholarship fund.
