Pitt Presents International Week 2006, Sept. 24-30

PITTSBURGH-Pitt's University Center for International Studies, Office of International Services, and Division of Student Affairs, in collaboration with a number of community organizations, will present International Week 2006, "Live Like the World Matters." The celebration of the diversity of the University, Oakland, and the greater Pittsburgh community begins Sunday, Sept. 24, and runs through Saturday, Sept. 30, and includes food and dance, panel discussions, art and music, and films and lectures.

Also part of this year's International Week festivities are the fourth-annual African Festival and the 27th-annual Latin American & Caribbean Festival, which will take place Sept. 29 and Sept. 30, respectively.

Sept. 24 Film Screening, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

10 p.m., ISLLC Lounge, Sutherland Hall

The documentary focuses on the April 2002 military coup attempt against Hugo Chavez.

Sept. 25 Lecture, "Israeli Music: Society Through Sound"

8-9:30 p.m., G-8 Cathedral of Learning

An audio-visual presentation explores the evolution of Israeli music since 1948.

Film Screening, Water, directed by Deepa Mehta

9 p.m., Assembly Room, William Pitt Union

A story that raises women's rights issues surrounding India's "widow houses."

Sept. 26 Global Dialog: John C. Cutler Memorial Lecture in Global Health Lecture, "Pandemic Origins: Prediction and Prevention of Global Threats"

Donald S. Burke, professor of international health and epidemiology and dean of Pitt's Graduate School for Public Health. A reception follows.

Lecture, "Affordable Wheelchair Technology for Developing Countries"

Sept. 27 Panel Discussion, "Contemporary Russian Youth Culture"

Several presentations by Russian students and scholars at Pitt focus on contemporary Russian youth culture in the areas of music, television, film, and daily life. Russian food will be served.

Lecture, "Ramadhan: A Spiritual Journey"

4-5 p.m., Kurtzman Room, William Pitt Union

Nusrath Ainapore, outreach director at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, discusses highlights of the religious observances during this month and its spiritual benefits.

Sept. 28 International Studies Fair on the Lawn

10 a.m.-4 p.m., William Pitt Union (inside if rain)

The fair exposes students, staff, and community to the diverse cultures represented on Pitt's campus and the many study abroad options at the University.

Book Presentation, "Transparency in Global Change"

Burkart and Leslie Holzner present their new book, Transparency in Global Change: The Vanguard of the Open Society (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2006).

Cultural Event, "Samba Dance Lessons"

Members of the Brazil Nuts Portuguese Club teach the basics of Samba dancing.

Hideo Wantanabe, assistant professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures at William Patterson University, discusses the prominence of adult karaoke learning classes in Japan. Light lunch will be served; bring your own drink.

Cultural Event, "Asian Karaoke Night"

An evening of karaoke with Asian refreshments provided. Partipation in the contest is not required, but prizes will be awarded to winners.
