Nationality Rooms Holiday Open House Set For Sunday, Dec. 3
PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh will hold a free Nationality Rooms Holiday Open House from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Commons Room, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.
Open house attendees will be able to purchase ethnic foods and crafts and view traditional performances and demonstrations. Scheduled performances include the Italian I Paesani Dance Ensemble, Yugoslav dance group Jedinstvo, Scottish Highland Dance Company, and Pás Slovak Folk Ensemble. A Japanese tea ceremony and an intricate bobbin lace weaving demonstration will be held.
Each year, the 26 rooms that encircle the Cathedral of Learning's Commons Room are trimmed to reflect their ethnic heritages, including such decorations as Lithuanian geometric straw ornaments, Polish paper cutouts, German gingerbread cookies, a French crèche, and a hand-carved Austrian manger scene.
Participants and sponsors are Pitt's African Heritage, Austrian, Chinese, Czechoslovakian, Finnish, German, Greek, Indian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Swedish, Syria-Lebanon, Ukrainian, Yugoslav, Latin American, Philippine, Swiss, Thai, Turkish, and Welsh groups, along with Quo Vadis and the Pitt Women's International Club and Women's Association.
The Nationality Classrooms are gifts to the University from Pittsburgh's ethnic groups. Built between 1938 and 2000, the rooms are designed in an architectural style appropriate to the country for which it is named.
From now through Dec. 23 and Jan. 3 through Jan. 12, the rooms will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. From Dec. 27 through Dec. 31, the rooms will open at 10 a.m., with the last tour beginning at 2:30 p.m. The rooms are closed Dec. 24, 25, 26, and Jan.1.
