CCAC President Sutin to Join Pitt Faculty To Expand Community College Leadership Training

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh School of Education today announced plans to expand its Higher Education Management Program in the Department of Administrative and Policy Studies to include a new center for community college leadership, to be led by Stewart Sutin, president of Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), who will join Pitt in the summer upon completion of his service there.

Pitt's management program trains leaders and administrators for professional jobs in higher education. This new program will complement the school's existing program with a targeted and extensive focus on community college leadership.

"Dr. Sutin brings tremendous real-world experience to Pitt," said Alan Lesgold, dean of Pitt's School of Education. "With him as a colleague, we will be able to support education in this region in important new ways. Combining the wisdom of practice, the agility of the business world, and the knowledge of the academy makes Dr. Sutin a perfect addition to our professional education team."

"Our endeavor at Pitt will be to help professionals with the ever-increasing challenges of managing institutions of higher education. I look forward to a collaborative effort with faculty in the School of Education as well as in other Pitt schools and departments as we seek to develop a multidisciplinary approach to foster future leaders for our nation's community colleges."

Prior to joining CCAC, Sutin was vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the International Fine Arts College of Miami and a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Thomas University in Miami and the Board of Overseers of the Graduate School of International Economics, Finance, and Business at Brandeis University.

Sutin also was president of Bank of Boston International, senior vice president and international department head for Mellon Financial Corporation, and assistant manager for the Latin American division of J.P. Morgan Chase.

A member of the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, Sutin has served on advisory boards at Pitt, including the University Center for International Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies.

Sutin earned his Ph.D. degree in Latin American history at the University of Texas at Austin in1975, a Master of Arts degree in Latin American studies at Georgetown University in 1969, and the Bachelor of Science degree in history at the Pennsylvania State University in 1966. He also attended executive education programs at the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration and Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Pitt's new community college outreach program will include a combination of on-campus and online courses, both credit and noncredit. Innovations in course delivery will be matched to community college needs.
