Pitt Film Studies Program to Host Lecture by Film Scholar Tom Schatz April 9

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh Film Studies Program in the School of Arts and Sciences, the Steeltown Entertainment Project, and Pitt in Hollywood will host a lecture by Tom Schatz, executive director of the University of Texas (UT) Film Institute, at noon April 9 in the Cathedral of Learning, Room 501, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. This event is free and open to the public.

Schatz, a professor in UT's College of Communication, will talk about its unique film-making program, which provides students with hands-on experience on the set of professional, feature-length motion pictures. The film institute's goal is to enable students to become skilled as professionals, artistic visionaries, and pioneers in an ever-changing medium.

Schatz received the B.A. degree in English from the University of Notre Dame in 1970. He coproduced "The Territory," a long-running regional PBS series that showcased independent film and video work. Schatz has written many books, including "Hollywood Genres" (McGraw Hill Humanities, 1981), "The Genius of the System: Hollywood Film Making in the Studio Era" (Owl Books, 1996), and "Boom and Dust: American Cinema in the 1940s" (University of California Press, 1999). His writing has appeared in numerous magazines as well as "The New York Times" and the "Los Angeles Times."
