Pitt Showcases High School Students' Computer Projects
PITTSBURGH-Web based portfolios on robotics, social networking, and GPS systems are just some of the projects that will be on display when the University of Pittsburgh's Technology Leadership Institute (TLI) holds its 2007 Student Recognition & Exhibition at 6 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Assembly Room of the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Ave.
The exhibition will be the culmination of the TLI's summer session, an annual six-week pre-college program that trains students intensively in mathematics and computer sciences. The event will showcase the accomplishments of the 25 high school students who were a part of the institute's 2007 session. The evening will include student presentations in computer programming, web design, computer systems, and SAT prep.
In addition, the institute's newly appointed board of advisors will be inducted at the exhibition. Each member of the board was selected for his or her demonstrated commitment to the computer science industry, higher education, and the community. Board members include: Rami Melhem, chair of Pitt's Computer Science Department; Sylvester Pace, president and CEO of the Negro Educational Emergency Drive (NEED); Sarah Coon, executive director of the Pittsburgh Center for Learning Policy; Daniel Friedson, visiting assistant clinical professor of law at Pitt; Joseph Kabara, visiting assistant professor of information sciences at Pitt; Grace Robinson, founder of Tomorrow's Future Inc., a mentoring, entrepreneurial and job training program; and Daryl Wade, founder of The Praktis, a graphic design firm.
Founded in 2006, the TLI's primary objective is to raise interest in and awareness of computer sciences in students largely underrepresented in technology fields. The program is open to high school students with a minimum 2.5 GPA who have an interest in pursuing a career in computer science. Pitt's School of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Computer Science sponsor the program, with additional support coming from the School of Information Sciences.
