Pitt Expert Says General David Petraeus Will Deliver a Sanitized Message to Congress and Will Call for "Staying the Course"
PITTSBURGH-Expect General David Petraeus' message to Congress today to be "stay the course," says University of Pittsburgh communications professor Gerald R. Shuster, an expert on political communication and presidential rhetoric. Shuster says Ryan Crocker, U.S. ambassador to Baghdad, will see that a sanitized version of the report is delivered to Congress, requiring no change in U.S. policy.
"I think Congress will come down hard," Shuster said. "Those on both sides of the aisle don't like the way the war is going." According to Shuster, legislators are getting heat from their constituents because much of the country's infrastructure is deteriorating while funds are going instead to support the war.
Shuster has taught at Pitt for more than 20 years. He teaches courses in political communication and presidential rhetoric and is a regular contributor to the media on political issues, elections, and candidates.
