Actor Tom Atkins to Speak at Pitt About the Film Industry Feb. 6
PITTSBURGH-Ever wonder how to break into Hollywood or what a successful career in the movies, television, or theater might be like? Veteran actor Tom Atkins may have the answers.
Pitt in Hollywood will feature Atkins, who will discuss his film and stage career at 4 p.m. Feb. 6 in Room 209, Lawrence Hall, 3942 Forbes Ave., Oakland. Atkins, who frequently performs at the Pittsburgh Public Theater, is known for his portrayal of Steelers founder Art Rooney in the acclaimed one-man show "The Chief," written by Gene Collier, sports columnist at the "Pittsburgh Post-Gazette," and Rob Zellers, director of education and outreach at the Public Theater. The event is free and open to the public.
Atkins' film career has included roles in "Lethal Weapon," "Escape From New York," "The Fog," and "Halloween III." He also has guest starred on such television shows as "M.A.S.H.," "Oz," "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," "Xena: Warrior Princess," and "Walker: Texas Ranger." His extensive stage career has included roles in "Keep It in the Family," "Vikings," "Nobody Hears a Broken Drum," and "The Unknown Soldier and His Wife." Atkins won a 1973 Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Performer in "The Changing Room."
Pitt in Hollywood is a student-run organization at the University that works to demystify the entertainment industry by bringing in guest speakers who work in television and film. Former guest speakers include Pitt alumni and producer/executive John Dellaverson (Lion's Gate Entertainment) and producer Bernie Goldmann ("300"). Pitt in Hollywood has helped students attain internships both locally and with studios and production companies in Los Angeles and New York.
