Pitt's Kuntu Repertory Theatre Schedules Auditions for Sept. 4

Contact:

PITTSBURGH-Auditions for the four Rob Penny plays in the Kuntu Repertory Theatre 2008-09 season will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Seventh-Floor Auditorium of Alumni Hall, 4227 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Actors should prepare a brief and original monologue; dancers should prepare a short piece that uses dance steps from the 1930s, such as the Charleston; and singers should prepare eight bars of two different songs-one jazz and one classical-that show their musical range. People of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate. Call-backs will take place from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

The entire Kuntu season is dedicated to the late Penny, who was playwright-in-residence for many years and a Pitt associate professor of Africana studies. Penny passed away in 2003.

The season will feature four mainstage productions that reflect on his career and different facets of the Black Pittsburgh life he examined, including family issues, music, and sports.

The scheduled productions are:

Diane's Heart, Oct. 16-Nov. 1; Clean Drums, Jan. 22-Feb. 7; Pain in My Heart and Reachings, a double bill of two one-act plays, April 2-18; and Among the Best, May 28-June 13.
