Pitt's Asian Studies Center to Present a Lecture by Author David Cortwright as Part of an Evening Celebrating Mahatma Gandhi's Teachings, Oct. 2

PITTSBURGH-The Asian Studies Center in Pitt's University Center for International Studies will present "Celebrating Gandhi, the Man and His Teachings," a free public event Oct. 2 to promote and commemorate Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings.

David Cortwright, president of the Fourth Freedom Forum, will give the keynote address on Gandhi and his ideals at 8 p.m. in Heinz Memorial Chapel, Fifth and Bellefield avenues, Oakland. Cortwright is a research fellow at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame and author of "Gandhi and Beyond: Nonviolence in an Age of Terrorism" (Paradigm, 2006).

A candlelight vigil and interfaith prayers and music will precede the address, beginning at 7 p.m. outside of Heinz Chapel-and moving inside the chapel at 7:30 p.m.

"Celebrating Gandhi, the Man and His Teachings" is made possible by a partnership between the Indian community of Pittsburgh and Pitt's Asian Studies Center.
