The University of Pittsburgh Announces New Study Abroad Initiative: Pitt Multi-regional Academic Program to Launch Spring 2010

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh's Study Abroad Office has developed a new study abroad initiative called Pitt MAP, or Pitt Multi-region Academic Program. The semester-long program will launch in spring 2010 with a semester-long trip to Buenos Aires, Cape Town, and Beijing.

The theme for the 2010 trip is State Memory/Private Lives. The curriculum will address the ways in which memory systems are constructed and sustained across three very different cultures. This focus will be pursued in coursework and with site investigations that examine the tension between official state structures intended to encourage unity-city museums, war memorials, national sites of commemorations-and private practices of self and family, such as holiday ritual, marketplace routine, and civic activism.

Students who have completed at least 24 credits on Pitt's campus can study abroad-though the coursework will be most suitable for juniors and seniors.

Future Pitt MAP themes will focus on global health; conflict and conflict resolution; sustainable development; globalized economy and global governance; and community, technology, and society.
