PITTSBURGH-Earlier this month, the University of Pittsburgh's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business held the McKinsey Cup Playoffs and Competition, the culmination of a course that seeks to equip students with the ability to achieve success in an increasingly complex business world. The course merges traditional and experienced-based learning by placing students with client organizations to work on real-world issues.

During the fall 2008 term, 12 such projects were undertaken with the following clients: American Eagle, Allegheny County, GENCO, 84 Lumber, Bayer, Mine Safety, Phillips Respironics, Ericsson, Precision Therapeutics, Sargent Electric Company, Federated Investors, and Westinghouse Electric Company. The teams had support from faculty advisors as well through attending workshops led by consultants from McKinsey & Company.

At the end of term, students squared off in the McKinsey Cup competition, which consisted of a round of playoffs and the final McKinsey Cup competition, held Dec. 5 and 6. Faculty, alumni, and business executives from participating organizations judged the playoffs, narrowing the competition to three teams.

The McKinsey Cup judges evaluated the work of the three finalist teams. Judges were Sunil Wadhwani, cofounder and cochair of the iGate Corporation; David Barensfeld, president and CEO of the Ellwood Group Inc.; and Jane Kirkland, former McKinsey director and partner with Kirkland & Associates. The event was moderated by Bill Besselman, associate principal, McKinsey & Company.

The winning team, MBA students Tom Higgins, Craig Romanek, Tien-I (Grace) Shen, and Gurpreet Ubhi, who worked with client Ericsson, Inc., were awarded the McKinsey Cup. John T. Delaney, dean of the Katz School and the College of Business Administration, presented the award, which was provided by the Pittsburgh office of McKinsey.

The winning presentation proposed implementation programs for areas of Ericson's operations, including marketing, sales, solution approach, products/services, and supply chain. For an electronic version of the presentation, contact Amanda Leff.
