Pittsburgh, Along With 99 Other Cities Around the World, Will Host An April 25 Event Supporting the Children of Northern Uganda

PITTSBURGH-On April 25 in 100 cities across nine countries, Invisible Children will host The Rescue, an international event to demonstrate solidarity with the children of northern Uganda-specifically the child soldiers in the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).

The Rescue is modeled around the experiences of child soldiers who are abducted from their homes. Participants will meet at the "abduction" point, on the lawn of Soldiers and Sailors, 4141 Fifth Ave., Oakland, starting at 3 p.m. and march in groups of 20 to the "LRA camp" at Schenley Park Meadow, Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive, Oakland. At the camp, participants will wait-as the child soldiers in the LRA wait-until members of the media and local celebrities come to their rescue. After being "rescued," participants will spend the night in Schenley Park reflecting on fate of the child soldiers still awaiting rescue in northern Uganda.

The Invisible Children is a nonprofit organization that works to document the lives of those living in regions of conflict in an effort to educate the Western world, so that it may be a voice for change. Students from the University of Pittsburgh, La Roche College, Chatham University, and Carnegie Mellon University have organized the Pittsburgh event.

Northern Uganda has been ravaged by 23 years of civil war in which hundreds of children have been abducted, thousands of civilians have been killed, and more than 100,000 people have fled their homes. As the crisis continues to destabilize the region, Invisible Children is working to bring the plight of those affected by the war to the attention of the international community.
