Pitt to Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Toshiba International Foundation Oct. 16-17
PITTSBURGH-Pitt's Asian Studies Center within Pitt's University Center for International Studies will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO) Oct. 16-17 with a free public symposium; registration is requested. TIFO is a nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to promoting an understanding of Japan through international exchanges while contributing to local and global community development. Since its establishment in 1989, the foundation has fostered international understanding of Japan through cultural exchanges, sponsorship of symposia, and outreach programs. Pitt is one of just two universities in the United States to be invited to join TIFO's anniversary celebration.
The anniversary celebration is dedicated to the memory of Keiko Imai McDonald, former Pitt professor of Japanese literature and cinema, who passed away unexpectedly in September 2008. Titled "Japan's Cultural Imagination and Its Contribution to the World," most events will be held in 125 Frick Fine Arts and Cloisters, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland.
The symposium will feature a workshop on using Japanese films in the classroom, lectures on women in Japanese culture, Japanese classical theater, Asian popular culture in films, and the international influences of video games. In conjunction with the symposium-as part of a film series hosted by the Asian Studies Center-there will be a screening of "Kamikaze Girls" (Tetsuya Nakashima, 2004) at 7: 30 p.m. Oct. 16 in 125 Frick Fine Arts Building. There also will be an exhibition of art by contemporary Japanese artist Hiroki Otsuka, curated by Eric Shiner, the Milton Fine Curator of Art at the Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, on display from Oct. 16 through the fall semester in the University Art Gallery, Frick Fine Arts Building. In addition, Japanese prints are on display in Hillman Library, Special Collections Room, 3960 Forbes Ave.
