Pitt to Present Forum on Philanthropy Dec. 1
PITTSBURGH-The future of philanthropy will be the topic of a presentation that is part of the University of Pittsburgh's Johnson Institute for Responsible Leadership Philanthropy Forum. Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of the Acumen Fund, a nonprofit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solving global poverty, will lead a discussion titled "The Future of Philanthropy: Making Markets Work to Serve the Poor," to be held at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 1, Pittsburgh Athletic Association, 4215 5th Ave., Oakland. The event is free and open to the public, however, an RSVP is required.
Novogratz will discuss how the Acumen Fund has pioneered ways to allow markets to serve the very poor with goods and services that can change their quality of life. She has recently published her memoir, "The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World" (Rodale Books, 2009), in which she explains how the most well-intentioned aid efforts can fail and how the slow, steady approach is more effective, according to a review by "Business Week".
The forum is cosponsored by Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, Center for Global Health, and Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business' International Executive MBA Program.
For more information or to RSVP, contact the Johnson Institute at 412-648-1336 or gspiapf@pitt.edu.
