Pitt Volunteers to Distribute Food to Nearly 800 Families Dec. 22

Contact:

PITTSBURGH-In an effort to provide support in the ongoing fight against hunger, 50 volunteers from the University of Pittsburgh's Faculty and Staff In Service to Community will help distribute food during the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's (GPCFB) monthly food distribution, at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 22, in the Food Bank's Duquesne Warehouse, 1 No. Linden St., Duquesne. The monthly distribution usually serves 650 to 750 families, but because of the holiday season, the food bank is preparing for 800 or more families.

Steve Zupcic, assistant director for community relations at Pitt, says faculty and staff have staffed GPCFB's distributions since the program's inception in March 2009. "There is a serious problem of need in the Pittsburgh region. By assisting the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's distribution of a balanced selection of food directly to needy families near the end of each month, Pitt is trying to do its part," said Zupcic.

Pitt's Faculty and Staff In Service to Community, formerly the Pitt Volunteer Pool, was founded in 1991 as an affiliation of Pitt faculty and staff members who expressed an interest in voluntary service to nonprofit organizations in the Pittsburgh area. The association comprises more than 2,000 members who volunteer upwards of 10,000 hours of community service annually.

In addition to GPCFB, the Faculty and Staff In Service to Community serves such local organizations as Global Links, Project Bundle-Up, and Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force. The association also coordinates the University's participation in such national service projects as the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Month and Christmas Day at Pitt: A Salvation Army Dinner for the Homeless and Needy.

The GPCFB is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization that collects and distributes food through a network consisting of more than 380 members throughout 11 Southwestern Pennsylvania counties.

All food inquiries should be made directly to GPCFB at 412-460-3663. For more information on Pitt's Faculty and Staff In Service to Community, contact Steve Zupcic at 412-719-0286 or stz@pitt.edu.
