Pitt to Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 15-21

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh will celebrate the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events in his honor from Jan. 15 through 21. The celebration begins with a Unity Brunch-held for the first time this year-from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 15 in the William Pitt Union (WPU) Ballroom, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. At 6 p.m. that evening, an Interfaith Service will take place in Heinz Memorial Chapel, Fifth and Bellefield avenues, Oakland.

Highlights of the weeklong celebration include a day of service Jan. 18 with projects at the Allegheny County Jail, Carnegie Library in Oakland, Carnegie Science Center, and Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, and a presentation Jan. 19 by Mae Jemison, physician and astronaut. Jemison was the first African American woman to go into space, blasting into orbit aboard the shuttle Endeavour on Sept. 12, 1992.
