Three New Members Nominated to Serve on Pitt's Board of Trustees

PITTSBURGH—The Nominating Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees today named three candidates for membership on the Board, including one as an emeritus trustee. The full Board will act on the nominations at its Feb. 14 meeting.

Nominated to serve as trustees are Michael A. Bryson, executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer of Mellon Financial Corporation, and Catherine D. DeAngelis, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Nominated to serve as an emeritus trustee is Richard P. Simmons, retired chair, president, and CEO of Allegheny Technologies Inc. (formerly Allegheny Teledyne).

Michael A. Bryson began his career at Mellon Financial Corporation in 1974 in the former national banking department and has since held a variety of positions in corporate banking, capital markets, corporate finance, institutional banking, and strategic planning. He is a member of Mellon's senior management committee.

Bryson earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh and the M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School. A lifetime member of Pitt's Alumni Association, Bryson is that organization's first vice president; he previously served as treasurer. He is an active volunteer for Pitt's Faculty and College of Arts and Sciences and for the University's capital campaign. Bryson formerly served on the University of Pittsburgh Corporate Council and as a member of the Chancellor's Circle volunteer board. He was also a student recipient of the M. M. Culver Memorial Fund, which is awarded to outstanding mathematics majors.

Catherine D. DeAngelis, M.D., is the first woman to serve as editor of JAMA. She also is editor-in-chief of scientific publications and multimedia applications for the American Medical Association, overseeing not only JAMA but also all Archives publications and JAMA-related Internet Web site content. Previously, she was editor of JAMA's Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Prior to working for JAMA, DeAngelis was vice dean for academic affairs and faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she continues to hold a faculty position as professor of pediatrics. She is the author or editor of 10 books and has had more than 150 original articles, chapters, editorials, and abstracts published. She also has been on the editorial boards of numerous journals.

DeAngelis earned the M.D. degree at Pitt and the Master of Public Health degree at Harvard University. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine and has been an officer of numerous national academic societies, including service as past chair of the American Board of Pediatrics. In 2000, Pitt selected her as a Legacy Laureate, one of the highest honors bestowed on distinguished alumni.

Richard P. Simmons served as a University of Pittsburgh trustee for six years, from 1986 to 1992. During his tenure, he served on the executive and institutional advancement standing committees and on the ad hoc committee on the structure and operation of the Board. He was a University-appointed director of the Foundation for Applied Science and Technology Board and of the board of Presbyterian-University Health Systems, Inc. (now known as UPMC Health Systems). Simmons also served as chair of Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business Associate Program for two years and continues as a member of the Katz College of Business Administration Board of Visitors.

In 2000, Simmons and his wife, the late Dorothy P. Simmons, donated $5 million to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to establish a center for education and research in interstitial lung disease and an endowed chair in pulmonary research, both in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine.

An active member of the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned the Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgy in 1953, Simmons has been honored by Pitt with the University of Pittsburgh Third Century Medallion and the University of Pittsburgh Trustees Medallion.

A former trustee may be elected to emeritus status in honor of his or her distinguished past service to the Board.
