University of Pittsburgh's Sally Newman to Be Honored at National Conference at Pittsburgh Hilton

PITTSBURGH Sally Newman, director emerita of the University of Pittsburgh Generations Together (GT) program, will be honored this month by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) for her ongoing dedication to intergenerational work, both in this country and around the globe.

Newman will be presented with the Mildred M. Seltzer Distinguished Service Recognition at AGHE's 28th Annual Leadership Conference, to be held

Feb. 28–March 3 at the Pittsburgh Hilton and Towers, downtown. The presentation will take place during the AGHE business meeting, 5:15-6:15 p.m. March 1.

"Sally has served as the institutional representative, our main AGHE institutional contact and voting representative for the University, since 1992. She has also served on numerous committees over the years, including our executive committee," said AGHE Director Derek D. Stepp.

Newman, who maintains an office at Pitt's University Place, retired in June as head of GT, where she worked for 23 years implementing and overseeing programs that united children with elderly adults. She continues to nurture the concept of both generations learning from one another in her new position as chair of the International Consortium for Intergenerational Programs, a nongovernmental organization based in the Netherlands.

Newman's contributions to the field include an annual Intergenerational Training Institute, held on the Pitt campus every summer, and the Intergenerational Specialist Certificate, a noncredit 100-hour program that gives professionals in the field credentials for their careers. She continues to play a significant role in the expansion of intergenerational work in her position as editor of the Intergenerational Programming Quarterly: An Intergenerational Journal of Program Development, Research, and Policy, expected to be published early next year.
