Pitt and Buchanan Ingersoll Announce New Diversity Scholarship
February 26, 2002
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the law firm of Buchanan Ingersoll have established a new three-year law school scholarship at Pitt. The Pitt/Buchanan Ingersoll Diversity Scholarship—which will be granted to one eligible candidate each academic year beginning this fall—was created to attract outstanding students to Pitt's School of Law and to help provide the Pittsburgh legal community with a diverse pool of attorneys.
"The School of Law is thrilled about our partnership with Buchanan Ingersoll," said David Herring, Pitt law school dean. "Together, we will be able to create and support a diverse educational environment and professional community. This initiative has the potential to result in a substantial enrichment of the Pittsburgh legal community."
William R. Newlin, Buchanan Ingersoll's CEO, commented, "Buchanan Ingersoll is committed to improving diversity within our firm, and it is with great pleasure that we are able to extend that commitment to include this collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh. This scholarship will work to attract a diverse body of outstanding law students to our region, and that is an objective the firm completely supports."
Buchanan Ingersoll and Pitt will award the three-year scholarship to one student in 2002, an additional student in 2003, and a third student in 2004, so that by 2004 and every year thereafter, there will be three Pitt/Buchanan Ingersoll Diversity scholars in the Pitt law school. Pitt's law school admissions office will recommend qualified prospective students to the selection committee.
The University and Buchanan Ingersoll announced the new scholarship at the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) Ujima Champagne Brunch on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Fifth Ave., Oakland. During the brunch, Buchanan Ingersoll was also awarded the Outstanding Law Firm Award by BLSA for its commitment to increasing and retaining minority law students and lawyers at the firm.
