Pitt to Host Coauthor of "Empowering Women: Land and Property Rights in Latin America" March 21

PITTSBURGH—Carmen Diana Deere, coauthor with Magdalena León of "Empowering Women: Land and Property Rights in Latin America" (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2001) with visit the University of Pittsburgh for a book presentation at 3:30 p.m. March 21 in Rooms 2M & 2K56 of Posvar Hall,
230 S. Bouquet Street, on the Pitt campus.
Deere is a professor of economics and director of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She earned the Ph.D. degree in agricultural economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and the master's degree in development studies from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Deere is past president of the Latin American Studies Association, has served on a number of editorial boards, and was associate editor of the University of Pittsburgh Press' Latin American Studies Series, which includes her current book.
Deere's research has focused on gender and development, peasant household economics, agrarian reform, and the organization of production in the transition to socialism.
The lecture will be followed by a book signing and reception at 5 p.m. The free event is sponsored by Pitt's Center for Latin American Studies, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, Department of Economics, and Women's Studies Program, as well as the Latin American Studies Series of the University of Pittsburgh Press.
