Pitt Faculty to Examine the Corporatization of the University at March 18 Plenary Session

PITTSBURGH—"The Corporatization of the University" is the topic for the Spring Plenary Session of the Faculty Senate of the University of Pittsburgh which will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. March 18 in the Assembly Room of the William Pitt Union (WPU), 3959 Fifth Ave., on the Pitt campus.

Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg will open the Plenary Session. He will be followed by keynote speaker David F. Noble, professor of social science at York University, Ontario, Canada. Noble is cofounder, with Ralph Nader, of the National Coalition for Universities in the Public Interest. The author of several books on automation and the future of the university, Noble's most recent publications have examined the impact of technology and corporate capitalism on universities. His most recent book, "Digital Diploma Mills: the Automation of Higher Learning" (Monthly Review Press, 2001), focuses on the implications of distance education for higher education.

Prior to the Plenary Session, from noon to 3 p.m. in the WPU Lower Lounge the Faculty Senate's Community Relations Committee will sponsor the 2nd Annual University of Pittsburgh "Celebration of Service." The event will highlight a representative sampling of projects and opportunities from across the University community, including academic and professional schools, centers and programs, and student and staff service activities. "Celebration of Service" is designed to demonstrate how the teaching, research, and service mission of the University is being advanced through community outreach, applied research, and service scholarship.
