PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh's Computer Learning Center is offering two new certificate programs to individuals seeking to improve their skills in database development and business software usage. In addition, the Center has become an approved education provider under Pennsylvania Act 48, which requires an educator to set aside 180 hours for professional development activities every five years in order to maintain a teaching certificate.

The Certificate in Business Software is a noncredit program that teaches students how to create a budget and financial analysis, develop presentation materials, and search for specific information both on the Internet and among database records. To earn the certificate, students must spend 72 hours in the classroom and present a portfolio of completed work.

The Certificate in Database Development uses Microsoft Access to teach students how to create, update, search, and report from a computer database. Students must complete 58 hours of classroom work and submit a special project to earn the certificate.

Educators interested in using the Center to fulfill Act 48 professional development requirements can attend a series of June workshops specifically designed for teachers or attend classes and workshops anytime during the year. Workshops can also be provided at school sites for in-service activity.

The Center, part of Pitt's College of General Studies, offers beginning as well as advanced courses in software application, Internet topics, programming languages, and networks. It is located in downtown Pittsburgh in the Kossman Building,

100 Forbes Avenue, Suite 1105
