Pitt Professor Honored by Medical Library Association

PITTSBURGH—Ellen Detlefsen, associate professor of library and information science in the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Pittsburgh, is the recipient of the 2002 Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award of the Medical Library Association (MLA), the national association of health information professionals.
Detlefsen will receive her award on May 20 at the Awards Luncheon and Ceremony during MLA's 2002 Annual Meeting in Dallas, Tex.
The Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award honors outstanding educators in the field of health sciences librarianship and informatics who demonstrate skills in teaching, curriculum development, mentoring, research, or leadership in education at local, regional, or national levels.
Detlefsen is a tenured faculty member in SIS, with joint appointments in Pitt's Women's Studies Program and the Center for Biomedical Informatics. She earned the A.B. degree in American studies from Smith College, and the M.S. degree in library service, the M.A. degree in American history, the D.L.S. degree in library science, and the M.Phil. degree in American history, all from Columbia University.
Detlefsen's areas of expertise and teaching interests include biomedical and health sciences information, medical informatics, and resources and services for special populations such as patients and health care consumers and the aging and their caregivers. She directs the Highmark Minority Health Link initiative, which seeks to build minority-sensitive health materials for health care consumers in the African American communities of western Pennsylvania. This project is supported by a Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield grant to SIS' Department of Library and Information Science.
