Pitt Welcomes Russian Delegation to Sept. 13 Panel Discussion on Political Challenges Facing Women

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), Russian and East European Studies Center, and Women's Studies Program will host a delegation of 10 Russian women participating in a Sept. 13 panel discussion on the challenges American and Russian women face in participating in the political process. The panel discussion will take place from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. in 3S07 William W. Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., in Oakland.

The Russian delegation, comprising women interested in enhancing their leadership capabilities, is in Pittsburgh through Sept. 19 and was brought here by Pennsylvania Peace Links, a women's organization that seeks to bring about world peace by eradicating the threat of conventional and nuclear war and promoting international cooperation, conflict resolution, and full participation in the democratic process. The 10-member group is part of a larger Russian delegation, 2,500 women in all, brought to Washington, D.C., for briefings on the American democratic process.

Pitt faculty taking part in the panel discussion are GSPIA Dean and Professor Carolyn Ban and Susan Hansen, professor of political science and former chair of the Women's Studies Program. Other local participants include Susanne Kimberland, counsel for State Senator Jane Orie (R-Dist. 40); financial consultant Bonnie DiCarlo; and Sue Broughton, director of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and Greater Pittsburgh
