University of Pittsburgh Announces Lineup for 32nd Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert

PITTSBURGH—Legendary jazz musicians from around the world will convene on the University of Pittsburgh campus Oct. 29–Nov. 2 for the 32nd Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, the longest-running event of its kind in the United States.

Nathan Davis, director of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program, will perform and direct the following musical greats: Oscar Brashear, trumpet; Benny Bailey, trumpet; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Jackie McLean (tentative), saxophone; Benny Golson, saxophone; Pat Martino, guitar; Monty Alexander, piano; Bob Magnusson, bass; and Carl Allen, drums. This is the first year Martino, Magnusson, and Allen have participated in the annual event.

In keeping with tradition, the guest performers will conduct free on-campus seminars, host mini-clinics for students at area schools, and give free performances at other community venues. Two free on-campus evening lectures on the history and business of jazz will take place Oct. 29 and 30. The week will culminate with a concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 2 at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Concert tickets are $18 general admission and $8 for students with a valid Pitt I.D. Founded in 1970 by Pitt Jazz Studies Director Nathan Davis, the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert was the first academic large-scale jazz seminar in the country to assemble internationally renowned artists with aspiring student musicians.
