Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series Hosts Essayist Jo Ann Beard Oct. 23
October 11, 2002
PITTSBURGH—Essayist Jo Ann Beard will speak as part of the University of Pittsburgh Writing Program's Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series (PCWS) at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, Schenley Drive, in Oakland. Beard is the third speaker in this free lecture series.
Beard won the Whiting Foundation Award in 1997 for "The Boys of My Youth," a widely praised collection of autobiographical essays. Meredith Kahn of Harper's Bazaar calls the book "a luminous, funny, heartbreaking book of essays about life and its defining moments."
One of Beard's essays, The Fourth State of Matter, is included in the anthology "Best American Essays." Her work also has been published in the New Yorker, Story, and other magazines. She is working on a new collection.
A resident of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Beard earned the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting in 1987 and the Master of Arts degree in creative nonfiction writing in 1992 from the University of Iowa.
The "Contemporary Writers Series" is cosponsored by Pitt's Asian Studies Program and the Book Center, and the Wyndham Garden Hotel-University Place.
