PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh celebrates its 32nd Annual Jazz Seminar and Concert Oct. 29 through Nov. 2 with a star-studded lineup of musicians, free campus lectures, two jazz films, a jazz exhibit, and community outreach visits to schools and other venues, culminating with the annual concert at Carnegie Music Hall at 8 p.m. Nov. 2.
Guest performers include Oscar Brashear, trumpet; Benny Bailey, trumpet; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Bobby Watson, alto saxophone; Benny Golson, saxophone; Pat Martino, guitar; Monty Alexander, piano; Bob Magnusson, bass; and Carl Allen, drums. This is the first year Martino, Magnusson, Watson, and Allen have participated in the event. This year's cosponsors include Mellon Financial Corp. Foundation and the Pittsburgh Foundation Multicultural Arts Initiative.
CONCERT DETAILS
The Nov. 2 concert will take place at Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Avenue, and will feature arrangements by Pitt Jazz Studies Director Nathan Davis. The diverse playing styles and impromptu nature of the gathering make this a one-of-a-kind performance. Tickets, $18 for general admission and $8 for students with a valid Pitt I.D., are available at any TicketMaster location by phone at 412/323-1919 and on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, and at the William Pitt Union box office.
State Representative William R. Robinson (D-19th District) will serve as the evening's master of ceremonies. At intermission, two new members of Pitt's International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame will be inducted, and a special award from the University will be presented to one of the performers. The concert and lectures will be recorded, and the audio and videotapes will be added to the University of Pittsburgh-Sonny Rollins Jazz Archives.
