Pitt Schools of Social Work and Law Cosponsor Annual Rubash Distinguished Lecture and Panel Discussion Titled "The Substance Abuser: Client or Criminal?"
PITTSBURGH—Matthew Howard, associate professor in the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, will deliver a talk titled "The Substance Abuser: Client or Criminal?" as the 2003 Norman J. and Alice Chapman Rubash Distinguished Lecture from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, in the Teplitz Memorial Courtroom on the ground floor of Pitt's School of Law.

Howard's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Marlene Burks, chief administrative officer at Tadiso Inc., one of the country's leading drug rehabilitation agencies; Clair Crittenden Capristo, chief of staff for the Allegheny County district attorney's office; the Honorable William Kenworthy, administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration; and Ken Ramsey, president and CEO of Gateway Rehabilitation, one of the largest in-patient and out-patient substance abuse treatment facilities in Western Pennsylvania.
Howard received the Ph.D. degree in social welfare from the University of Washington in 1990 and spent the following six years in academic positions at the schools of medicine at both the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland and at the University of Washington in Seattle. A faculty member in the George Warren Brown School of Social Work for the past six years, Howard has published more than 80 articles and a book on youth violence, received the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award for academic years 1998-99 and 2000-01, and received two federal grants last year from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The Rubash Distinguished Lecture Series was established through gifts from Norman J. Rubash, a 1957 graduate of the School of Law, and his wife, Alice Chapman Rubash, a 1956 graduate of the School of Social Work.
