New Chair, Five New Members Elected To Serve on Pitt's Board of Trustees

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees today elected Ralph J. Cappy of Pittsburgh, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, to assume the leadership of the board as chair, effective immediately. Cappy succeeds William S. Dietrich II of Pittsburgh, who will remain an active member of the board. In addition, the board elected five new members, while re-electing five current members.

The five new trustees are Frederick W. Hill of New York, executive vice president and director of corporate marketing and communications of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.; Ronald A. Magnuson of Greensburg, vice president of Consumer Affairs for Allegheny Power and chair of the Advisory Board of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg; F. James McCarl III of Sewickley, Pa., retired president and chief executive officer of McCarl's Inc., a PPL Corporation company; Richard W. Roeder of Titusville, Pa., a senior partner with Roeder & Rothschild and chair of the Advisory Board of the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville; and Burton M. Tansky of Dallas, Texas, president and chief executive officer of Neiman Marcus Group.

In addition, current members Michael A. Bryson of Sewickley, Pa., executive vice president and chief financial officer of Mellon Financial Corporation; Cappy; Alfred L. Moyé of San Mateo, Calif., retired senior university affairs consultant for Hewlett-Packard Company; John H. Pelusi Jr. of Allison Park, Pa., executive managing director and managing member of Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P.; and William E. Strickland of Pittsburgh, president and chief executive officer of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, were re-elected to the board.

New Board Chair Ralph J. Cappy has been a member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania since 1990 and a member of the Board of Trustees since 1992. He was sworn in as Pennsylvania's chief justice in January 2003. As a trustee, he serves on the Academic Affairs/Libraries, Compensation, Conflict of Interest, and Property and Facilities committees of the board. In addition, he is chair of the School of Law Board of Visitors.

Cappy earned the B.S. degree in 1965 and J.D. degree in 1968 at Pitt. He is a Pitt Legacy Laureate and the recipient of the School of Law Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Frederick W. Hill joined the Chase Manhattan Corporation in 1997, prior to its merger with J.P. Morgan & Co. He is director-at-large of Pitt's Alumni Association and a member of the School of Law Board of Visitors. Hill served as an adjunct professor at the University for 11 years and received multiple Teaching Excellence awards. He earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in administration of justice through Pitt's College of General Studies in 1975 and the Juris Doctor degree from Pitt's School of Law in 1978.

Ronald A. Magnuson has been employed with Allegheny Power for the past 22 years. He has been a member of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Advisory Board since 1995 and was elected chair in 2002. He is vice chair of the Energy Association of Pennsylvania and a member of the Board of Directors of the Regional Industrial Development Corporation, the Western Division of the Pennsylvania Economy League, and the Pennsylvania Economy League State Board.

F. James McCarl III began his career at McCarl's Inc., a leader in the mechanical engineering contracting industry, in 1969 as an estimator. McCarl's Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of PPL Corporation in 1999. He is a director of the Blackhawk-Neff Electric Company, a trustee of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

McCarl earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in economics through Pitt's College of General Studies in 1973. He is a member of the Board of Visitors for the College of General Studies and for the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business/College of Business Administration. A 2002 Distinguished Alumni Fellow, McCarl received the Pitt Volunteer of the Year Award in 1993 and was named a College of General Studies Distinguished Alumnus in 1988.

In addition to serving as a senior partner in the law firm of Roeder & Rothschild, Richard W. Roeder is a trustee of the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation. A member of the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville Advisory Board since 1980, he was elected board chair in 1995. He previously served as a Pitt trustee from 1995 to 1997 and from 1999 to 2001.

Prior to assuming his current position with the Neiman Marcus Group, which comprises specialty retail stores and direct marketing, Burton M. Tansky held senior management positions at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks & Company, and other national retail establishments. A Pitt Legacy Laureate and the recipient of Pitt's Alumni Association Award of Distinction in 1990, he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in history through Pitt's College of Arts and Sciences in 1960.
