PITTSBURGH—Two University of Pittsburgh students will be awarded the

Dr. John Knox Hall Jr. Scholarship at the Department of Psychology's annual fall reception at 3 p.m. Oct. 7, in the Martin Colloquium Center, 4th floor, Sennott Square, 210 S. Bouquet St., in Oakland.

The scholarship recipients, Lorie Ann Fischer and Koty Nadeau, are both in their junior year and former students of the late John Knox Hall Jr., a lecturer in the psychology department who passed away at age 37 in April 2002. Each will receive approximately $5,000.

Fischer, of Tarentum, Pa., plans to study clinical psychology in graduate school, with a focus on neuropsychology, specifically, to determine whether the deprivation of glucose to the brain of a patient with anorexia nervosa has a detrimental effect on cognitive functions. Nadeau, of Whitesboro, N.Y., also plans to pursue graduate school, with an interest in cognitive behavioral treatment for cancer patients.

Hall, who had been a member of the psychology faculty since 1999, earned the Bachelor of Science in psychology, the Master of Science in psychology, and the Ph.D. in clinical psychology degrees, all at Pitt.

"John was extraordinarily popular with his students and really connected with them," said Professor Anthony Caggiula, department chair. "This scholarship, which will be given annually, is a fitting tribute to his memory and to the impact of his all-too-brief teaching career."

The scholarships, administered through the Pittsburgh Foundation, were made possible through a generous gift from Hall's family. For the first year only, the scholarship competition was limited to Hall's former students.

The Department of Psychology's annual fall reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m., and will feature poster displays by approximately 25 faculty members who will be on hand to answer questions about their areas of research.
