Expert on Stereotyping and Racial Prejudice to Speak at Pitt

PITTSBURGH—Joe Feagin, graduate research professor of sociology at the University of Florida and a leading expert on racial and gender prejudice, will speak at the University of Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. Oct. 13 in the ballroom of the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Ave., in Oakland.

The event, cosponsored by Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems and the School of Social Work, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the talk.

Feagin's lecture is called "The Coming White Minority" and will explore the social and political ramifications of shifting demographics. According to Feagin, Whites are a statistic minority in four of the five largest U.S. cities. He says there could be a potential for increased conflict as our country becomes more multicultural and multiracial.

Feagin is the author or co-author of 45 books in the area of racial prejudice, including The First R: How Children Learn Race and Racism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2001), Double Burden: Black Women and Everyday Racism (M. E. Sharpe, 1988), and The Many Costs of Racism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2003). His books have won numerous national and professional association prizes, including a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. Feagin is also the author of more than 160 articles on racial, gender, and urban issues. He is a past president of the American Sociological Association.
