Pitt to Hold International Education Week Events Nov. 17-21

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh will hold presentations, discussions, a book drive, and other events from Nov. 17 through 21 to celebrate International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education being held to recognize the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

Pitt's involvement is part of the effort to promote programs that prepare Americans for the global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. Individuals and institutions—schools, colleges and universities, embassies, international organizations, businesses and associations, and community organizations—interested in international education and exchange activities are encouraged to participate.

Following is a schedule of programs and activities.

For the Pitt Community

• The Internalization of the U.S. Classroom, Educators Discuss Realities and Possibilities, K-Collegiate: Wednesday, Nov. 19, 5-7 p.m., 2K56 Posvar Hall. Primary, secondary, and university education practitioners will share innovative internationalization programs, initiatives, and plans for the future.

• Locally Developed, Globally Focused Internet Resources: Friday, Nov. 21,

11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., 3J51 Posvar Hall. Pitt faculty will present their self-designed Internet resources aimed at providing students, researchers, and professionals around the world with access to international information and materials.

• Measure your global awareness: Individuals can take a Global I.Q. test at http://exchanges.state.gov/iew/quiz.htm and bring a printout of the quiz results to either of the two seminars, The Internalization of the U.S. Classroom presentation Nov. 19 or Locally Developed, Globally Focused Internet Resources Nov. 21, for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to The Book Center.

• University Library System: Nov. 10-Dec. 1. The Hillman Library will showcase its international collection in the display cases at the front entrance of the library.

• Children's Book Drive: A book collection of gently used children's books will begin Monday, Nov. 17, and continue through the end of the semester. There are various collection points around campus.

• Education Journey Around the World: Tuesday, Nov. 18, Schenley High School. The high school and its Parent, Student Community Council will welcome the Pitt Community to join in its celebration. Carolyn Ban, dean of the Pitt Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, and Larry Davis, dean of Pitt's School of Social Work and director of the Center on Race and Social Problems, are two of the three keynote speakers. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for informational tables, food, and handicrafts from around the world. Keynotes start at 6:30 p.m. For information, call 412-622-8200.

For International Students

• World Classroom: Nov. 17-Nov. 20. The YMCA After School Programs will host international students, scholars, and spouses who will share the customs and culture of their home countries with primary school children. For more information, contact jbrayman@pitt.edu.

For Young Children

• International Story Time: Monday, Nov. 17, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Oakland. Children are invited to the library to learn nursery rhymes from around the world. Story time is 10:15 a.m. for children ages birth-2, and 11 a.m. for children ages 2-4.

International Education Week activities are sponsored by the Institute for International Studies in Education, Office of International Services, University Center for International Studies, University Library System, Amizade Global Service Learning Center, America Reads Pittsburgh, Jumpstart Pittsburgh, Mortarboard, and the Center for International Legal Education.
