Pitt Students to Spend Spring Break in Ireland As Part of Service-Learning Course
PITTSBURGH—Sixteen University of Pittsburgh students from Pitt's Amizade Global Service-Learning Center's Literature and the Contemporary class will travel to Northern Ireland today to spend their spring break working on a service project involving the peace mediation process. The students return to Pittsburgh March 14.
While in Ireland, the Pitt students will meet with leaders of the peace process and will have the opportunity to experience Irish culture and explore the countryside.
Throughout the term, students from the Literature and the Contemporary class have been reading about the history and culture of Northern Ireland. Upon returning from abroad, they will study how Northern Ireland's writers have worked to understand the ongoing conflicts and how they have used their writings to shape the peace process.
The Amizade service-learning courses at Pitt allow students to apply academic knowledge to the real world, build intercultural relationships, and challenge themselves academically through community partnership and service. Students who want to volunteer and be active in communities and also study abroad have the opportunity to learn and receive Pitt college credits through this program.
This summer, Amizade will offer 16 Global Service-Learning programs through the University. For more information on these courses and how to apply, visit www.globalservicelearning.org or call 412-648-1480.
