Pitt Straight-A Student is 2004 Emma W. Locke Award Winner
PITTSBURGH—Ryan D. Hughes, a senior majoring in rehabilitation sciences in the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS), recently was named the 2004 Emma W. Locke Award winner at Pitt's annual Honors Convocation in Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.
Established in 1946 by Charles A. Locke in memory of his mother, the award is presented annually to a graduating senior in recognition of high scholarship, character, and devotion to the ideals of the University. The student must have at least a 3.85 QPA and plan to continue his or her education after graduation.
Hughes holds a 3.99 QPA overall and a 4.0 in the SHRS. He will remain at Pitt to pursue a clinical doctorate in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, into which he was granted, and has maintained, guaranteed admission when he was initially accepted at the University.
A Lancaster native, Hughes helped to reestablish and reorganize the Rehabilitation Science Student Association and served as its vice president. He also is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Because of his academic and leadership excellence, Hughes has represented the undergraduate program in rehabilitation sciences during open houses, informal prospective-student information sessions, and at an information session for academic advisors. This term, Hughes was selected by his professor to be a teaching assistant for the Kinesiology and Biomechanics Lab. In addition, he is a volunteer tutor in neuroscience.
As a member of the Providence Church of Pittsburgh, Hughes serves on the church's worship team, volunteers on the sound and technical support team, and plays drums for the Sunday praise-and-worship service. He also has participated in campus ministry with the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and has shared responsibilities as praise and worship leader at Chi Alpha Ministries. He is a former member of the Heinz Chapel Choir.
Hughes' community service activities include volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, the Pittsburgh Project, and in UPMC Montefiore Hospital's Physical Therapy Department.
