Pitt's Asian Studies Center to Present a Lecture by George C. Shen March 29
PITTSBURGH—A native of Shanghai, China, George C. Shen, writer and former chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, has written extensively on China's much talked about economy. Shen will use his knowledge of Chinese economics to address the question, "Would a Strong Chinese Economy Be a Good or a Bad Thing?" in a March 29 lecture of the same title. The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. in 3P11 Wesley W. Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland.
Shen was chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, the leading Chinese financial daily newspaper in Hong Kong, from 1986 to 1996. During that time, he also served as a part-time member of the Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong government and chair of the Course Advisory Committee on Language Studies at the City University of Hong Kong. Before joining the Journal, Shen headed the administration and public relations divisions of the Asian Productivity Organization in Tokyo, Japan, a position he held for nearly 20 years. His fields of expertise include economics, productivity, and the performing arts.
Shen's publications include Productivity Measurement and Analysis (Asian Productivity Organization, 1983), Essays on China's Economy (Zhong yang bian yi chu ban she, 1989), and "China's Investment in Hong Kong" in The Other Hong Kong Report (Chinese University Press, 1993), among others.
The free public lecture is sponsored by Pitt's Asian Studies Center within the University Center for International Studies. A reception will follow the lecture. For more information, call 412-648-7371.
