Pitt Program Council Sponsors April 12 Presentation by Nancy Cartwright, Emmy Award-Winning Voice of Bart Simpson From The Simpsons Television Show

PITTSBURGH—Actress and voice-over artist Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, will give a free public Pitt Program Council-sponsored multimedia presentation about the animated television show The Simpsons at 8:30 p.m. April 12 in the University of Pittsburgh's William Pitt Union Assembly Room, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Cartwright has won an Emmy Award for her voice work on The Simpsons, a Drama-Logue Award for her performance in her one-woman play, In Search of Fellini, and the Drama Critics Circle Award for her acting in the play The Transgressor.

Cartwright also has appeared in the feature films Twilight Zone-The Movie, Flesh & Blood, Undercover, The Great O'Grady, and Godzilla. She starred in the TV movies Marian Rose White, Suddenly, A Tangled Web, Precious Victims, Not My Kid, Rules of Marriage, and Deadly Lessons. She has made guest appearances on numerous television shows, including Cheers, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Bridges to Cross, Generation, and Empty Nest.

Cartwright, who grew up in Kettering, Ohio, knew by the age of 10 that she had talent when she discovered she could make people laugh through her acting and unique character voices. She joined a children's theater company at 12 and performed in various plays throughout her years at Fairmont West High School. Cartwright won first place in Humorous Interpretation in the National Forensic League finals in her junior year of high school. As a senior, she was president of the league at Fairmont West.

In Los Angeles, Cartwright found a mentor in Daws Butler, the voice of Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and hundreds of other characters. She landed her first job as the voice of Gloria on the animated series Richie Rich. After returning to the stage for an acclaimed run of The Transgressor, which earned her accolades from every reviewer in Los Angeles, she landed an ABC contract and a starring role in In Trouble, a pilot that didn't make it to the regular season. These accomplishments came before earning the Bachelor of Arts degree in theater arts at the University of California at Los Angeles in June 1981.

Cartwright created the voice of Bart Simpson in 1987, when The Simpsons appeared occasionally on The Tracy Ulman Show as a short cartoon, before the cartoon became an independent popular animated television series.
