Contributions of Pitt Emeritus Professor Cho-yun Hsu Recognized By the Association for Asian Studies
PITTSBURGH—Thirty years of dedicated service to his profession has earned University of Pittsburgh Emeritus Professor of History and Sociology Cho-yun Hsu more than a gold watch. At the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), held from March 4 to 7 in San Diego, Calif., Hsu received the 2004 Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies Award, the organization's highest honor. A private reception to celebrate Hsu's achievement will be held at 4:30 p.m. April 6 in the Cloisters of the Frick Fine Arts Building, Schenley Drive, Oakland.
The citation given by AAS' Board of Directors reads, "This award recognizes Professor Hsu for his life-long dedication to the advancement of Asian Studies in the international arena. His 30 years of service as University Professor of History and Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh was characterized by the highest standards of teaching and professional mentoring, as evidenced by his many students who now teach in North American and Asian universities. . . . Cho-yun Hsu is an exemplary scholar, a dedicated teacher, and a selfless role model of exceptional moral authority."
Hsu began his career at Pitt in 1970. His research and teaching specializations included ancient Chinese civilizations and comparative civilizations. During his tenure at Pitt, Hsu taught such courses as History of East Asia, East Asian Research, History of Chinese Thought, Ancient China, and Ancient Worlds, as well as supervised more than 35 theses. He received the B.A. and M.A. degrees from National Taiwan University and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. Hsu authored or coauthored numerous publications, including Business and Professional Ethics (The Hung Foundation, 1996), Exploring Interpretation in Chinese History (World Scientific Publishing Co., 1996), and History of the Western Chou Civilization (Yale University Press, 1988).
