Famed Philanthropist George Soros to Discuss Topics from His New Book, The Bubble of American Supremacy, Oct. 5 at Pitt's Barco Law Building

PITTSBURGH—In a free lecture—taking place at noon Oct. 5 in the Teplitz Memorial Moot Courtroom, located on the ground floor of Pitt's Barco Law Building, 3900 Forbes Ave., Oakland—famed philanthropist George Soros, chair of Soros Fund Management LLC, will speak on the war in Iraq and the upcoming election, topics he also addresses in his new book The Bubble of American Supremacy: The Cost of Bush's War in Iraq (Public Affairs Books).

The Pitt lecture is one in a series Soros is giving in cities throughout the country during the month of October.

Born in Budapest in 1930, Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary. In 1947, he fled communist Hungary for England, where he studied at the London School of Economics. After graduating, he immigrated to the United States, where he amassed his fortune through an international investment fund he founded and managed. Soros has been active as a philanthropist since 1979, when he began providing funds to help Black students attend Capetown University in apartheid South Africa. A network of philanthropic organizations he founded is active in more than 50 countries around the world. These organizations are dedicated to promoting the values of democracy and an open society, spending nearly $450 million annually to promote these goals. Soros is the author of eight books, including The Bubble of American Supremacy. His articles and essays on politics, society, and economics regularly appear in major newspapers and magazines throughout the world.

Soros' public lecture is hosted by Pitt's Global Studies Program and Center for Russian and East European Studies within the University Center for International Studies, Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, Department of Political Science, and University Honors College.
