Additional Details Announced for 34th Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert Nov. 3-6

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh celebrates its 34th Annual Jazz Seminar and Concert Nov. 3-6. Jazz Week will include a lineup of internationally renowned jazz musicians, free on-campus seminars and lectures, appearances in Pittsburgh area schools and other community venues, a free film screening, an exhibition, and the annual concert 8 p.m. Nov 6 at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.

Pre-Jazz Week brown bag lunch concerts will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 and 27 in the William Pitt Union.

Jazz Week guest performers include Lew Soloff, trumpet; Oscar Brashear, trumpet; Donald Harrison, alto saxophone; Joe Lovano, tenor saxophone; Mark Whitfield, guitar; Patrice Rushen, piano; George Mraz, bass; and Idris Muhammad, drums. These legendary musicians will perform with and under the direction of saxophonist Nathan Davis, head of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program and founder of the annual event.

CONCERT DETAILS

The Nov. 6 concert will feature arrangements by Davis, and the diverse playing styles and impromptu nature of the gathering will make this a one-of-a-kind performance. Allegheny County Councilman William R. Robinson will serve as the evening's master of ceremonies. At intermission, Rushen will receive the 2004 Jazz Seminar Committee Award, and two new members of Pitt's International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame will be inducted. The concert and lectures will be recorded, and the audio- and videotapes will be added to the University of Pittsburgh Sonny Rollins Jazz Archives.

7 p.m. Movie: A Great Day in Harlem

Directed by veteran radio producer Jean Bach, this 1995 documentary is the story behind the famous group photo of 57 jazz musicians on 126th Street in Harlem. The 1958 photo, taken by Art Kane, appeared in Esquire, and represents three generations of jazz history.

JAZZ PHOTO EXHIBITION AND DISPLAY

The piano that once belonged to jazz pianist, composer, and arranger Mary Lou Williams will be on display in the WPU Assembly Room, as will photographs of jazz artists taken by freelance photographer Ralph Echols. Some recorded concerts of past years, housed in the University of Pittsburgh Sonny Rollins Jazz Archives at Pitt's Hillman Library, will be available for listening.

BROWN BAG LUNCHES

As a preview to Jazz Week and to set the mood on campus, several student musicians from the Pitt Jazz Ensemble will perform from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 and Oct. 27 on the first floor of the WPU.
