University of Pittsburgh's Black Action Society to Feature Speaker Tony Brown Feb. 17
PITTSBURGH—As part of the celebration of Black History Month at the University of Pittsburgh, media entrepreneur Tony Brown will speak at 8 p.m. Feb. 17 in the William Pitt Union (WPU) Assembly Room, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. The event is sponsored by Pitt's Black Action Society.
Brown, a television journalist and commentator, self-help advocate, radio talk show host, and film director, is the commentator of the PBS series Tony Brown's Journal. Brown received the Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and the Master of Science degree in psychiatric social work at Wayne State University, Detroit.
Author of three books, Brown most recently wrote What Mama Taught Me: The Seven Core Values of Life (William Morrow, 2003). He was the founding dean of Howard University's School of Communications in Washington, D.C., where he also was a professor. He recently was appointed as the first dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University in Virginia.
Brown's awards include induction into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Silver Circle, receiving the National Director's Legacy Award for Journalism from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development Agency, and being named Ambassador of Free Enterprise by The Sales and Marketing Executives International Academy of Achievement. Brown founded the annual Black College Day in 1980, and is the honorary chair of the National Organization of Black College Alumni, Inc., which advocates for the preservation of Black colleges.
This event and the following symposia, hosted by the Black Active Students Inter-Collegiate Struggle, are free and open to the public.
Symposia scheduled are "Politics and Politicians" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in WPU's Dining Room A, "Minorities in Corporate America" at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 in WPU's Kurtzman Room, and "Realize and Rectify" from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in various WPU locations. Exact rooms will be posted at the WPU entrance.
