PITTSBURGH—Author Philip Beard will give a reading from his debut novel Dear Zoe (Viking Penguin, 2005), at 7 p.m. April 4, in the University of Pittsburgh Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, Schenley Drive, Oakland. A book signing and reception will follow. This event is free and open to the public.

Beard's book was rejected by 30 publishers before Viking Penguin agreed to print his story, which Publisher's Weekly has called "a hot deal." It is a story of a girl who lost her half-sister, Zoe, in a traffic accident on Sept. 11, 2001. The tragedy is lost in the frenzy resulting from the terrorist attacks that took place that day, and Beard's book depicts the grief and struggles of a girl coping with loss and adolescence.

A 1988 graduate of Pitt's School of Law, Beard returned to Pitt to earn a degree at the School of Education in 2000. From 1990 to 2000, he was a partner in the law firm of Stonecipher, Cunningham, Beard, and Schmitt where he is still of counsel.

He lives with his wife and three daughters in Aspinwall, Pa.

This event is sponsored by Viking Penguin Group and Pitt's Book Center and Department of English. For more information, contact Melissa Grube at
