Poets Deborah Slicer and Jeffrey Oaks to Give Reading At Pitt April 27

PITTSBURGH—Poets Deborah Slicer and Jeffrey Oaks will give a reading at noon April 27 in the University of Pittsburgh Book Center, 4000 Fifth Ave., Oakland. This event is free and open to the public.

Philosopher and poet Deborah Slicer won the Autumn House Poetry Prize, in 2004, for her book The White Calf Kicks (Autumn House Press, 2003). Slicer, an associate professor at the University of Montana in Missoula, specializes in environmental ethics and ecofeminism and is also the founder of the University of Montana's Program in Ethics, Agriculture, and Society. She has been a member of the editorial board for the journal Environmental Ethics and was a guest editor for Ethics and the Environment, an interdisciplinary forum, for its Winter 2003 publication. Slicer received the Ph.D. and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Virginia.

Oaks, a lecturer in Pitt's English department and managing director of its Contemporary Writers Series, is the author of two chapbooks, The Unknown Country (State Street Press, 1992) and The Moon of Books (Ultima Obscura Press, 2000). He has published poems in such literary magazines as Southern Poetry Review, Nimrod, Cumberland Poetry Review, and 5 a.m. In addition, Oaks has won two Academy of American Poets Prizes, two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and, this year, a fellowship from The Pittsburgh Foundation. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Binghamton and the Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from Pitt.
