LEGENDARY JAZZ TRUMPETER CLARK TERRY TO PERFORM WITH PITT JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Contact:

PITTSBURGH, March 18 -- World-renowned trumpeter Clark Terry will perform with the Pitt Jazz Ensemble in its spring concert,

"A Salute To Clark Terry," on Thursday, April 16 at 8 p.m. in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

A native of St. Louis, Terry grew up playing the trumpet and by 1948 was performing with Count Basie's orchestra. A few years later, he was a featured soloist in Duke Ellington's orchestra, performing with Ellington for 8 years. When he accepted a job as one of the key players in Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" band, Terry became the first black musician on the NBC payroll. When the "Tonight Show" moved to Los Angeles, Terry decided to remain in New York and pursue a busy schedule as a studio musician and jazz star in demand all over the world.

In addition to his recordings and sell-out appearances at festivals and concerts, Terry is well-known as a jazz educator who frequently visits secondary schools and universities to share his knowledge and love of jazz with student bands.

Tickets for "A Salute To Clark Terry" are $8 general admission, $4 for students and are available at the William Pitt Union box office. For more information, contact the Department of Music at 624-4125 or Pitt Jazz Studies at 624-4187.
