ISRAELI SCHOLAR TO SPEAK AT PITT ABOUT AT-RISK CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Contact:

PITTSBURGH, May 8 -- Mordecai Arieli, a faculty member of the Tel-Aviv University School of Education and a University of Pittsburgh visiting scholar, will share his expertise on residential schools for at-risk children on Tuesday, May 19 at 4 p.m. in the Kurtzman Room of the William Pitt Union.

Arieli's talk, "Caring For Children and Youth: Satisfactions and Discontents," will focus on how Israeli youth care workers interact with that nation's teenagers, who struggle with, among other issues, the life-threatening prospect of serving in the Israeli army when they become 18.

While at the Tel-Aviv University School of Education, Arieli has headed a number of departments, including Teacher Training in the Social Sciences and Research in the Sociology of Education and the Community. An influential advisor to many Israeli residential education programs, he has also authored several books on the subject. His latest, "The Occupational Experience of Residential Child and Youth Care Workers," has received outstanding reviews by specialists in the field.

The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Pitt's Office of Child Development. For more information, please call 412-624-7425.
