ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE AT ALLEGHENY OBSERVATORY
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 11-- For one night this year all three of Allegheny Observatory's telescopes will be in operation and open to the public. It's the annual observatory open house to be held on Friday, Oct 2. People will be able to gaze through the telescopes, including the 30-inch Thaw Refractor, at a variety of objects in the night sky including the moon, the planets and stars.
Visitors will be given a slide presentation and a self-guided tour of the observatory. The Amateur Astronomer's Association of Pittsburgh will make additional telescopes available on the front lawn.
Admission is free, but reservations are required. In order to receive tickets in time for the open house, reservations should be made as soon as possible by calling (412) 321-2400. Reservations for tours and viewing can be made in half-hour increments from 7 until 10 p.m. Once visitors enter the observatory, they are welcome to stay until closing.
The 86-year-old observatory is located in Riverview Park at
159 Riverview Ave., and is America's largest scientific observatory located within a major city.
