PITT'S WILLIAM PITT UNION BUILDING TURNS 100
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 18 -- A ragtime band, barbershop quartet, and stilt walker will help to recreate the ambiance of the old Hotel Schenley as its successor, the University of Pittsburgh's William Pitt Union (WPU), turns back the clock in celebration of the building's 100th anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The day-long party which is free and open to the public includes carriage rides, bellhops at the information desk, yesteryear photos in the atrium, films on the main floor, and costumed strollers throughout the building and grounds. At noon all will gather on the WPU Bigelow porch for birthday cake.
"I've received calls from so many people who have fond memories of the Hotel Schenley," said Christine Chergi, WPU manager. "One man still had the cake of soap he took from his room, a woman has provided her wedding picture from 1942 taken on the Forbes Avenue porch, and we even have a 1925 Easter Sunday menu from the hotel restaurant."
Forbes Field historian, Dan Bonk, will speak in the Grand Lounge at
3 p.m. and high tea will be served at 4 p.m. in the Lower Lounge and Kurtzman Room. Other entertainment at various times throughout the day will feature the Banjo Club, Mae West and W.C. Fields, a mime, and sports on the lawn.
